More Young Physicians Embracing Temporary (Locum Tenens) Practice
Findings in a recent survey by Staff Care, a VHHA-endorsed staffing services company, show a growing number of younger physicians just out of training are practicing on a temporary (or locum tenens) basis – an indication of how medical practice patterns are changing. The annual survey polled 2,087 physicians who work as locum tenens and fill-in temporarily for hospitals, medical groups and other health care facilities with medical staff gaps. Twenty-one percent of physicians surveyed said they began working as locum tenens upon completing training, a figure up from 16 percent from 2013 and 14 percent over 2012.
